Big changes coming to Newberry Park
Improvements are coming to a favorite park in the West End.
Newberry Park will get a regraded soccer and multi-purpose field, two new pickleball courts, a paved walking path, and 12 new parking spaces, including accessible ones.
A precast concrete restroom is also part of the plan, with construction expected to begin in July, wrapping up around Labor Day. Funding will come from the Community Development Block Grant.
City Council recently approved a resolution authorizing an award of professional services to Hunt Engineers, Architects, Land Surveyors and Landscape Architects for engineering service to construct improvements to the park as presented by Valerie Fessler, director of city community and economic development.
The park is nestled in a residential area where neighbors often can sit on their front or back porches and observe the activities.
The park is named after longtime Newberry resident and former city mayor Phil Preziosi.
In terms of parks, city public works and recreation needs, council authorized the purchase of one 2026 Ford F-Super Cab and one 2025 Ford F-350 box truck for the public works department as presented by Scott Livermore, department director. Public works is synonymous with streets and parks department and includes flood control. The fully accessible public works building is at 1500 W. Third St. next to River Valley Transit Authority.
