Montoursville school board accepts head varsity football coach’s resignation
The Montoursville Area School Board voted to accept the resignation of head varsity football coach Joe Hanna and acted on other matters during its recent meeting.
Hanna has headed the varsity program since 2023 after becoming interim head coach the previous year to take over for Mike Broughton.
Hanna, a Lycoming College graduate where he played football, had long been an assistant in the Montoursville program including under former head coaches Jim Bergen and J.C. Keefer.
Superintendent Dan Taormina said a replacement for the now-vacant coaching position has not been found.
He thanked Hanna for his service.
As part of its annual reorganization
process, the board re-elected Todd Badger as its president and David Young as vice president.
In other matters, school directors discussed the possibility of replacing turf at the varsity baseball field.
“Something needs to be addressed and done,” Daniel Albert said.
He suggested the possibility of the baseball team playing elsewhere, perhaps at Indian Park.
He noted that the field used by the varsity team requires too much maintenance and upkeep particularly after rain.
“I don’t know how many fields are built on a swamp,” he said.
Taormina agreed it’s an issue that needs to be explored but the problem won’t be resolved simply by putting down new turf.
“All I know is we need to get the ball rolling,” Albert said.
The board agreed to take up the matter at its January work session.
In personnel moves, the board approved Jacob Wagers as a long-term substitute science teacher.
Marina Schappell and Arienne Strickland were approved as substitute teachers and Chelsea Howe as a guest teacher pending clearances.
The board approved Bryan Miller, a certified school psychologist for comprehensive reevaluation services at a cost of $2,500.
