Williamsport buying 3 police cars

The Williamsport Bureau of Police is buying three Dodge Durango upfitted vehicles.

City Council approved a resolution authorizing the purchase of three pursuit-rated police vehicles and related upfit equipment as presented by Williamsport Bureau of Police Capt. Justin Ottaviano.

These purchases are allocated from the city police vehicle purchase budget. These purchases will replace three older model Durangos, he said.

Council President Eric Beiter observed these purchases are coming out of the regularly scheduled budget and asked the captain if this was anything out of the capital projects budget related to the purchases.

“Nothing out of that,” Ottaviano said.

Beiter asked when the city could expect delivery of these new vehicles.

Ottaviano replied they are ready to go and just need to be upfitted.

He estimated this would be no more than two months.

Beiter asked if the bureau will be selling older models.

“We will be selling three … probably allow us to sell four vehicles total,” Ottaviano said.

That money will go back into the general fund to offset the cost the bureau is putting out, the captain added.

The vehicles will be put out for bid on Municibid.

Councilwoman Bonnie Katz asked how many miles the used vehicles had on them.

“I’d say mid-sixties,” he said.

“But the wear and tear is unbelievable, right?” Katz asked.

The mileage may not seem like a lot but the bureau vehicles idle.

“They get used hard, so it’s not like your standard civilian vehicle,” Ottaviano said.

This is part of a vehicle replacement plan the bureau went over in detail with council during the 2026 budget talks.

Starting at $2.99/week.
