Former state trooper convicted of vehicular homicide in Tioga County may get new trial due to juror issue

A state trooper who was convicted of vehicular homicide in an accident claiming the life of a teacher in Tioga County in 2023 may get a new trial.

A state Superior Court panel has vacated the vehicular homicide conviction and ordered a new trial on that count for Michael J. Brown.

The three-judge panel on Monday found that failure to provide accurate information on the juror questionnaire form deprived Brown of his ability to intelligently decide whether to strike that individual, according to Pennlive.com

A Tioga County jury in May 2024 found him responsible for the death of Christine Woodward, 47, a teacher and mother of three from Troy.

Brown, then assigned to the Mansfield barracks, was on his way to work when the Feb. 11, 2023, accident occurred about 10:45 p.m. on two-lane Route 6 at the intersection with Ritz and Aumick roads east of Mansfield.

He testified he did not see anything coming in the opposite direction, so he began to pass in a no-passing zone ahead of a passing zone.

Starting at $2.99/week.
