Lycoming County government to take on duty of collecting unpaid City of Williamsport taxes
The City of Williamsport treasurer office collected $14.5 million in real estate taxes in 2025 and has turned over collection of $1.2 million in uncollected tax to the Lycoming County Assessments office.
Treasurer Adam Welteroth presented the resolution and one exonerating him from the duty of collecting the unpaid 2025 taxes to the City Council, which passed both resolutions.
Welteroth observed how the city tax collection office collected 90% of the real estate taxes, a difference of 2% from the previous year.
Welteroth gave kudos to the two employees, Wendy Williams and Kathryn Shoemaker, who are in the treasure’s office for their efforts, saying without them the amount collected would have been lower. The former treasurer, Kevin Mackey, announced his resignation in October.
With the second resolution approved, Welteroth and the treasurer/tax collections office in the city has the responsibility for collecting the 2026 taxes.
Councilwoman Bonnie Katz remarked how Welteroth acknowledging the efforts of Williams and Shoemaker was appreciated because not everyone gets such recognition for jobs well done.
