Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday warns of online risks during Lincoln Day Dinner

Speaking to the Sun-Gazette before the Lycoming County Republican Party’s Lincoln Day Dinner, Dave Sunday, the state’s Attorney General, highlighted the two issues that his office is focusing on.

“Issue one is the scamming of senior citizens – a huge issue,” Sunday said. “Technology has made it even more difficult for a lot of people to differentiate between a scam and something real.”

He said that his office has recently started an elder exploitation section where they investigate and prosecute people for stealing money from senior citizens.

“Pennsylvania’s got one of the highest numbers of senior citizens in the entire country…so it’s a major issue. I hear about it literally from morning ’til night,” he said.

The second issue he cited was the harms and dangers facing children on the internet.

Sunday, who was the keynote speaker for the dinner, noted that he has done a lot of bipartisan work in his capacity as Attorney General and is the co-chair of the National Bipartisan Consumer Protection Committee.

“Pennsylvania has been a lead state, along with a few other states around the country in doing what we can to hold tech companies accountable so that they will make their platform safer before something bad happens because you can’t put the guardrails up after the crash,” he said.

“Another big part of it is doing what we can to educate families and educate kids on how to avoid these pitfalls. But, unfortunately we live in this world…where society pulls kids online. As soon as a kid connects to a gaming system-it could be anything-and someone will unfortunately, probably try to use that to get to them,” he said.

Sunday said that his office is working through civil powers to try to compel companies to change the way that they do business.
