South Williamsport school board handles assortment of routine actions

Actions taken by the South Williamsport Area School Board at its most recent meeting included the approval of an agreement with Keystone Collections Group to collect taxes for Armstrong Township and DuBoistown and South Williamsport boroughs. A motion was previously passed, capping any increase in taxes in the 2026-27 budget to the adjusted index of 4.9%.

Staff approved by the board included Damien Donges as a second shift full-time custodian at an hourly rate of $14, effective as of Feb. 4. This follows the resignation of Rebecca Garner. Several spring athletic coaches and volunteers and theater staff were also approved, with stipends ranging from $750 to $2,674.

During the board’s January meetings, they approved the following financial items: the purchase of a 10-person Chevrolet Express cargo van from Hondru Fleet, at cost not to exceed $66,995; a seven year contract with digital Scoreboard for the purchase of two new scoreboards to be installed in the high school gymnasium, at an annual cost of $25,000, as well as the purchase of shot clocks, LED backlights and 15-foot scoretable at a cost of of $36,700; change orders with McKissick Associates, in the amount of $5,437.85; an IDEA-Section 619 agreement with BLaST IU17 for special education and related services to five year old students with disabilities enrolled in kindergarten.

In previous staffing decisions, the board approved Superintendent Dr. Eric Briggs as school safety and security coordinator; Jacob Steppe, as full-time maintenance employee at an hourly rate of $16; Hailey Carson as a teacher mentor for the remainder of the 2025-26 school year with a stipend of $250; Joseph Eckard as a part-time custodian at an hourly rate of $14; a number of athletic coaches for the 2025-26 school year with stipends ranging from $2,674 to $4,767; acknowledged the retirements of Jamie Bloom, high school math teacher, and Scott Manning, high school science teacher, Kevin Hayes, 4th grade teacher, and Anita Leahy, 6th grade teacher, all effective June 5; and the resignations of Tom O’Malley, head varsity and junior varsity softball coach, effective Dec. 31, 2025; Chris Vanaskie, boys soccer head coach, effective Dec. 10, 2025; and Johnna Harper, elementary school counselor, effective June 5.

A number of agreements were also given the board’s blessing, including one with Lycoming-Clinton Behavioral Health Choices to provide Intensive Behavioral Services to students and teachers for the 2025-26 school year and an agreement with Little League International to allow for usage of the organization’s batting cage facilities by the district’s baseball and softball teams at no cost to the district.
