Woman shot during standoff in Montoursville has died
The 43-year-old woman who was taken hostage in her Montoursville apartment and shot last week, Jonette Crossley, has died, according to Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr.
Crossely was “declared brain dead in the intensive care unit at UPMC Williamsport at 1:58 p.m. Saturday,” Kiessling said Monday morning.
The victim “was determined to be a suitable candidate for organ donation, and therefore medical staff coordinated with the Gift of Life Donor Program,” Kiessling said, adding that it is hoped that her lungs, heart and kidney can be used to save other people’s lives
“That is certainly one good thing that can come out of this horrible tragedy,” Kiessling said.
Once Crossley’s organs are removed, an autopsy will be performed at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown.
This is the first homicide in the county this year.
State police alleged that Johnnie Drummond, also 43, of Norwood, Delaware County, has been charged with shooting Crossley after taking her hostage in her apartment at 324 Jordan Ave. on Feb. 10.
Montoursville police went to the apartment to check on her welfare about 8:20 p.m.
There was no answer, but when they returned about 9 p.m., they heard voices inside the apartment.
Soon shots were fired, and the officers quickly took cover.
Numerous additional officers, including the city police department’s Special Response Team, sushed to the scene.
Negotiations lasted for several hours, until about 1:50 a.m. Wednesday when officers with the response team began to enter the apartment.
Investigators have not disclosed if they actually talked with Drummond or Cossley during the lengthy ordeal.
As officers were attempting to enter the apartment, gunfire erupted, state police said.
Crossley, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds was rushed to the hospital, while Drummond was taken into custody and jailed on no bail on charges of attempted homicide and related offenses.
A state police spokeswoman said Monday that the criminal complaint against Drummond will be amended at a later date, likely at his preliminary hearing, to change attempted homicide to hoicide.
In an online post provided by a member of Crossley’s family, it stated the victim “was sadly taken from us due to domestic violence.”
Crossley, who is survived by three daughters and two sons — ages 9 to 21, “touched so many hearts and brightened many lives,” the post stated.
“My mother was held hostage at gunpoint and endured abuse while negotiators attempted to de-escalate the situation. When entering into the home, my mother was murdered by her abuser,” the post said.
The Sun-Gazette was told Crossley worked at a couple of area restaurants.
“Her workers loved her. She was a sweetheart,” an employee at one of the establishments said of Crossley on Monday.
