The City of Williamsport recently promoted Williamsport Bureau of Police Capt. Justin Ottaviano to the position of chief, according to the city police Crime Watch website.

He was administered the oath of office by Mayor Derek Slaughter, according to the post.

Ottaviano replaces former Chief Justin Snyder, who, after his retirement, was lauded for his service to the bureau and to the community.

Ottaviano began his law enforcement career with the Porter Township police in 2005 and joined the bureau in 2008 as a patrolman.

Ottaviano has had several positions, including field training officer, training coordinator, and accreditation manager, while passing through the ranks with promotions to corporal in 2017, sergeant in 2019 and patrol captain in 2023.

Ottaviano presented a comprehensive proposed bureau budget for City Council to consider as part of the general fund 2026 budget. As part of the $11.7 million police budget approved the position of assistant police chief was eliminated. The chief’s salary was listed in the final budget approved at $115,012.

Ottaviano and the police administration have their offices located on the third floor of the Trade and Transit Centre I on West Third Street, while the patrol division is headquartered at the former Peter Herdic Transportation Museum at 810 Nichols Place.

Starting at $2.99/week.
