Gregg Township eyed as possible site for data center
LEWISBURG — Union County commissioners confirmed a meeting will be hosted by developer PNK Group regarding a site in Gregg Township that could potentially be used for a data center.
According to Milton-based newspaper the Standard-Journal, PNK’s meeting will be held at 4 p.m., April 2, in Allenwood. A flyer for the meeting being circulated online indicates township residents who sign up to attend will be informed of the meeting location upon registration.
“We haven’t met with (PNK) or talked with them about (the plan),” Chair Preston Boop said, following Tuesday’s commissioners’ meeting, according to the Standard-Journal. “I saw an invitation (to attend). I don’t know if we have a county involvement in that at this point. We haven’t discussed it between ourselves on if anybody’s going to attend that meeting.”
Currently, Gregg Township’s zoning ordinance doesn’t permit data centers. According to the flyer promoting the meeting, PNK has applied for an amendment to the township’s ordinances to allow for a data center to be opened in areas zoned for commercial or manufacturing uses.
If the plan moves ahead, PNK could put a data center into a currently unoccupied building. PNK already owns land in the township.
“We don’t own that land anymore… it’s restricted by the covenants for Great Stream Commons or municipal zoning,” Commissioner Stacy Richards said, according to the Standard-Journal. “It’s really a municipal matter.”
“There’s a couple of serious challenges with data centers, with the massive amount of electricity they need,” Boop said, according to the Standard-Journal. “We were told once before that (PPL Electric Utilities) does not have the ability or the will to provide enough electricity for a data center there.”
Boop said he learned at a recent conference in Harrisburg that approximately 10% or less of areas marked for possible data centers in Pennsylvania are actually ever developed, the Standard-Journal reported.
