Lycoming County man charged in connection with kidnapping
A Lycoming County man was charged in connection with a 2023 kidnapping and fatal shooting in Williamsport.
Davon Tamel Grissom, 38, faces allegations of second-degree murder and related charges in the death of Jermaine Derick Mullen, 39, of Williamsport, according to Pennlive.com.
The charges were filed by city police about a month after a county jury found Benjamin Villanueva III, 33, killed Mullen.
Villanueva is awaiting sentencing on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated assault, tampering with physical evidence and carrying a firearm without a license.
Mullen was shot twice in the back, once in the shoulder and once in the face at close range about 3:40 a.m. on Dec. 9, 2023, in the 1000 block of Memorial Avenue.
According to an affidavit, surveillance video from the Valley Inn in DuBoistown the evening before the shooting shows “Dutch” who has been identified as Grissom, greeting Mullen while the latter had a large amount of cash in his left hand. Video shows Grissom leaving the inn about 11:28 p.m. and returning with Villanueva at 12:19 a.m. Other purported evidence included additional video at a bar in Williamsport and a review of messages.
A search warrant revealed a coordinated effort between Villanueva and Grissom to lure Mullen into a dark area of the city.
First Assistant District Attorney Martin L. Wade contended during the trial that Villanueva knew Mullen had been selling marijuana and set out to rob him.
Wade theorized that at some point while the two were driving about, Villanueva forced Mullin into the trunk of his car and tied up the victim with his own shoelaces.
After Mullen popped the trunk using the inside latch and started running, Villanueva jumped from the still moving car and started firing.
Besides second-degree murder, Grissom is charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, robbery, kidnaping, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, criminal use of a communications facility and illegal possession of a firearm.
He has not been arraigned because he currently is in the Albion state prison serving an 11- to 22-year sentence on drug charges. The state Superior Court denied his appeal that the sentence was excessive, Pennlive reported.
