Montoursville fills school board seat

Montoursville Area School Directors during their most recent meeting filled a vacancy on their board voting to appoint Amanda Kling.

Kling, of Upper Fairfield Township, is a social worker and a part-time trauma therapist.

She fills the Region 2 spot representing Upper Fairfield and Fairfield townships formerly held by Brenda Oberheim who resigned from the board late last year.

The vote to appoint Kling to the board was 5-0.

Todd Badger, Sharon Meyer, Brad Eisenhower, Doug Gardner, and Tina McCloy voted yes.

Daniel Albert, John Houseknecht, and David Young were absent.

In other matters, the board discussed upgrades of the baseball and softball fields.

District Superintendent Dan Taormina told the board it would cost about $1.05 million to replace turf on both playing surfaces.

However, some board members felt that merely putting down new turf would fail to address the poor drainage issues.

“This is just a patchwork over the baseball and softball fields,” Sharon Meyer said. “Not that I don’t want to fix the fields.”

She said long-term issues need to be addressed rather than merely “putting a band-aid” on the problem.

Meyer expressed concern about where any water runoff might go.

One suggestion was to put in a French drain and link it the storm water system to prevent drainage onto the fields.

Taormina said a civil engineer should consider the issue.

The board voted to hire the following coaches:

· Aaron Runkle, head track and field, $4,300.

· Eric Easton, assistant track and field, $2,600.

· Michelle Simpson, assistant track and field, $2,600.

· Chad Eberhart, assistant track and field, $2,600.

· Jacob Wasilko, assistant track and field, $2,600.

· Amanda Walter, junior high girls soccer, $2,600.

· Jessica Cole, head cheerleading, $6,000.

The board also approved:

· The 2026-2027 school calendar.

· An agreement with Merakey for behavioral services.

· The BLaST IU budget.

The next school board meet will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 10.

Starting at $2.99/week.
