Muncy council acts on crosswalk safety project
Muncy Borough Council at its March meeting approved a change order for upcoming work for pedestrian crosswalk improvements.
The change order reflects a decreased cost for the project, according to Borough Manager Charles Hall.
“It (project) was bid at $215,000,” he said.
The reduced cost is $180,402.
The borough was awarded an Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) grant to fund the project.
Herr Signal & Lighting Co., which submitted the lone bid for the project, will perform the work this year.
The goal of the project is to improve pedestrian crosswalks safety at the following intersections: South Main and Lafayette, New and Broadway, South Washington and Lafayette, East Penn and South Washington, and East Water and Washington (Route 405).
LIVIC Civil Engineering officials noted that proposed safety improvements will include pedestrian activated rapid flash beams, high-visibility safety markings, crosswalk signs, and LED-in roadway warning lights.
Hall noted the project is expected to be completed by October.
In other matters, Muncy Police Chief James Dorman reported to council that police officer body cameras need to be replaced.
He said he wants to apply for a grant to cover the costs for new cameras.
“I’m looking at updating the whole system for about $30,000,” he said.
Each year, Dorman told council, the department needs to replace at least one of the cameras.
Hall reported to council that he is continuing to seek additional funding for a new borough building.
So far, the borough has secured a $500,000 state grant for the project projected to cost about $1.7 million.
The borough must spend its $500,000 allocation by 2028.
Council approved Hall to serve as a delegate and to attend the Pennsylvania Boroughs Association Conference in May.
Hall reported to council that the Shade Tree Commission will mark Arbor Day on April 28 with various activities at Margaret E. Waldron Park.
Hall advised council that the street sweeper has been repaired.
Council met in an executive session following the meeting to consider legal matters.
The next council meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 15 at Muncy High School.
