The City of Williamsport’s Public Works Department and city firefighters were dispatched to the top of Baldwin Street, just north of Charlotte Street, when a small sinkhole was discovered about 2:45 p.m. Monday.
The sinkhole, believed to be caused by a section of an underground pipe that cracked, was at least six feet deep, about three feet wide and five feet long. City employees put a temporary steel plate over the hole and closed the road to traffic until crews with the Williamsport Municipal Water and Sanitary Authority replaced the the damaged section of the pipe on Tuesday.
