Rash of vehicle break-ins reported in Hughesville

The Hughesville Police Department is receiving reports of vehicle break-ins of late around the downtown area.

Police Chief Rod Smith told borough council at its recent meeting that many of the incidents have occurred along the south end of Main Street.

He suggested people lock their vehicles after parking them.

Overall, Smith reported that his department considered 56 incidents of various alleged crimes during the month of March.

In other matters, council approved a yearly contract with Lecce Electric for traffic light maintenance.

The agreement covers traffic signals at Routes 405 and 220, $1,623, with those costs split between the borough and Wolf Township, and Routes 405 and 118, $2,970.

Council approved a one-year contract with Higher Ground Outdoor Services for mowing at a cost of $465 per cutting.

The mowing areas covered in the agreement are the borough building, Bodine and Memorial Parks, and the fire department.

Higher Ground submitted the lowest bid among three firms for the work.

Council approved paving of Sixth Street near the McCarty Thomas Funeral Home. The work is expected to be underway soon.

Council noted that Blackberry Alley will be paved this week.

Council accepted the resignation of Dorothy Bennett as borough tax collector.

The sale of a police car was approved by council for $1,550.

Richard Shuler asked council to consider selling him a small section of downtown property.

Shuler, a landlord, wants a parcel near Main and Water streets for two parking spots.

“We’re not looking to sell,” Council President Andrew Mook told Shuler.

Councilman Dan Cale said he too was not in favor of selling the property.

The next council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, April 27 at the borough building, 147 S. Fifth St., Hughesville.

Starting at $2.99/week.
