Parades and ceremonies planned for Memorial Day weekend throughout Lycoming County
RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent The Korean War Veterans color guard presents the colors during the annual Memorial Day service at the Lycoming County Veterans Park. The service included speakers, vocal presentations and laying of wreathes at monuments within the park.
Memorial Day parades and events are happening in communities in Lycoming County to honor the brave men and women of the military who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
These parades have been either confirmed by the sponsoring agencies or held traditionally on Sunday or Monday:
Sunday
• Picture Rocks, parade, 1:30 p.m. forming at the Baptist Church on Center and Elm streets, and proceeds to the Picture Rocks Cemetery for a Memorial Day service.
Memorial Day
• The Annual Civil War Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Day Ceremony, confirmed and sponsored by the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, N-SSA at 9 a.m. The approximately 45-minute ceremony includes a Union Army observance, cannon salute, and the decorating of graves with flowers. Bring a lawn chair if desired and please avoid parking in the Circle. The G.A.R. Circle in Wildwood Cemetery, Williamsport. Follow the signs on the same side as the Chapel/Office.
• Jersey Shore — Jersey Shore Area Veterans Council Lost at Sea at Route 44 Bridge, Jersey Shore, 6 a.m.; American Legion Post 36 military service, 7 a.m.; VFW Post 5859 military service, 8 a.m.; cemetery service, 9 a.m.
• Salladasburg — Parade held at 11 a.m. Forms on Dochter Street. Veterans honored at Salladasburg United Methodist Church. The parade features the Jersey Shore Area High School Marching Band, fire engines from Jersey Shore, antique cars, tractors, and Little League teams. Immediately following the parade, a ceremony to honor local veterans will take place in the Salladasburg United Methodist Church parking lot, complete with a 21-gun salute and Taps.
• Muncy — Muncy Memorial Day Parade, 11 a.m. Forms at East Mechanic and North Main streets and ends at the cemetery. Celebrate America 250 Years of Freedom with American Legion Post 268. Graveside service to follow. Lions Club is hosting a chicken barbecue at Lions Park.
• Montoursville — Memorial Day Service at Montoursville Cemetery, 10 a.m. and hosted by American Legion with guest speaker Col. Bryan P. Ewing Jr., who is currently assigned to the Army War College, Carlisle Barracks. Ewing previously served as Deputy Group Commander at Joint Base San Antonio – Lackland, Texas, where he advised 10 recruiting squadrons comprising more than 1,000 active-duty and civilian personnel across 18 states.
• Hughesville — Memorial Day commemorated with an annual parade starting at 9 a.m. from the Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department. The procession moves to Pleasant Hill Cemetery, for a service honoring fallen veterans. Service to follow at Pleasant Hills Cemetery. Typically, if weather is inclement the service is held at the high school auditorium.
• Montgomery — Parade, 9 a.m. starting at the Bower Decker Post 25 American Legion and proceeds south on Broad Street to community park. Service in the park to follow.
