For the last few months at every meeting of the Williamsport Area School Board, the progress on construction at the stadium has been measured by will enough work be done in time to hold commencement there on June 4, and as of this month, it looks like it will be a go-that is if the weather cooperates.
“The good news is we’re still on target to have the entrance open for graduation,” said Dr. Timothy S. Bowers, superintendent.
The entrance may be done, but there will still be a few things that aren’t “completely buttoned up,” he said, such as no gates on the entrance.
He explained that the gates are being custom made and will be put in place until the entrance is completely done.
There will be restrooms, but no concession stand .
“We really tried to prioritize what we really needed for graduation night,” he said.
“The lights have been installed-so the new lights will be functioning. The new speakers are up so the sound system will be functioning from the press box,” Bowers said.
Overall he characterized the project as “coming along nicely.”
“Really with all the delays that we’ve had with issues and snow and cold…the crazy weather we’ve had, the fact that we’re still on target is pretty impressive,” he said.
He wanted to remind people that the area will still be an active construction zone.
“We’re going to make it look as nice as possible, but there’s certain areas we do have to protect for safety reasons,” he said.
“Our guests won’t be able to wander down and check out the field house. They’re going to probably want to, but we’re going to have construction fencing there because we’re not going to have an occupancy permit for that part of it,” he said.
The work will also expand to the tennis courts so that the public will not be able to use them this summer.
Bowers pointed out that “there won’t be a lot of education programming going on at the top of the hill this summer because it’s really going to be a construction zone.”
“We’re really going to hammer this out for the summer so the tennis courts, those kinds of things, will not be usable all summer,” he said.
In relation to the construction projects, the board approved six change orders. These include: Turnkey, Inc. for electrical work, $5,188; Hosler Enterprise, for HVAC, $3,083; Lobar for general construction, $21,941, $30,555 and $122,090. There was also a credit from Lobar of $4,766.
