Court: Woman to get $2.8 million for abuse by coach

A woman who sued Loyalsock Township School District because of sexual abuse by a former middle school basketball coach will receive almost $3 million.

A jury in U.S. Middle District Court after a civil trial found that the district was liable for the harm caused by Kelli Vassallo, the former coach, after the woman sued the district in 2021.

The award is $2.8 million in damages.

The award will not cost district taxpayers, as insurance will cover it, according to PennLive.com.

Insurance will cover the entire amount, Loyalsock Township School District Superintendent Brooke Beiter told Pennlive.

The district will be consulted but the decision on whether to appeal will be made by the insurance carrier that took responsibility for the defense, she told PennLive.com.

Beiter said the district operates under strengthened misconduct policies.

Attorney Jillian Roth, one of the victim’s lawyers, told reporters it was “outrageous” that the district ignored reports of child sexual abuse and failed to stop a child predator, according to news reports.

“These administrators should’ve been standing up for her in the first place and yet she was the one to have to finally put a stop to this serial child abuser,” Roth told a television news reporter.

Vassallo was arrested in 2016 and charged with sex crimes for having a sexual relationship with the two teenage girls. She pleaded guilty in 2018 to institutional sexual assault of a minor and corruption of minors and was sentenced to two years in prison and 10 years of probation.
