Hughesville borough prepares for Fourth of July fireworks night
Hughesville Borough Council at its recent meeting addressed the upcoming July 4 fireworks event in the community.
The annual Backyard Broadcasting’s Set the Night to Music Fireworks Celebration will begin at dusk and take place at the county fairgrounds which will be closed to the public that evening.
Fair parking lots and other areas of the community will be open for viewing including Friends Church, 137 S. Third St.
“We don’t know where else to send anyone right now,” Mayor Richard Smith said.
Smith noted that the Fourth of July Fireworks Committee would meet to further discuss and plan the event.
In other matters, council briefly addressed the issue of barking dogs.
Council President Andrew Mook said amending the borough noise ordinance might be something to consider for dealing with the problem.
“It’s getting out of hand,” he said.
Police Chief Rod Smith said the real problem is enforcement such as gathering evidence and finding people to testify in court if a barking problem is pursued.
Councilman Jerry Daugherty then raised the issue of stray cats roaming the borough.
Other borough officials agreed it’s a problem, including the mayor who noted he trapped a stray feline.
That led someone to question whether trapping cats violates a borough ordinance.
Council quickly moved on to other business, including voting to approve parking restrictions along borough streets during the annual Lycoming County Fair held in July.
Borough solicitor Scott Williams reported to council he is finalizing a franchise agreement with Comcast.
Council is expected to approve the contract at its next meeting.
Council approved a no-parking request from Friends Church along a section of Fourth Street during its Bible Vacation Week, Aug. 3 to Aug. 7.
Council met in executive session following the meeting to consider personnel matters.
The next council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday, July 13, at the municipal building.
