Investigators give updates on causes of several recent Williamsport fires

Williamsport fire investigators have determined that the June 2 fire that caused extensive damage to a family’s rental home at 1050 High St. was accidental, according to Deputy Fire Chief Kenneth Smith.

While the investigation remains ongoing, investigators believe the cause of the blaze centers around several batteries connected to chargers in a first-floor front living room, Smith said.

The flames broke the glass to a back door, allowing the fire to spread to a back porch, he said.

While no damage estimate has yet been set, there was very little, if anything, renter Khiara Barone and her boyfriend, Kevin Garg, could save, Smith said, adding that Barone had no renter’s insurance. Barone will be displaced for an extended period of time.

Her 12-year-old son, who was the only one in the house, safely escaped the fire.

Regarding another city fire in the same week, investigators determined that careless smoking set items ablaze on a porch fire at the rear of 944 W. Fourth St. on June 1, Smith said. The fire was discovered and quickly extinguished by firefighters before it had a chance to spread inside.

Concerning another investigation, a fire in the vacant home at 1519 Memorial Ave. on the night of March 29 is considered suspicious, Smith said.

The cause of a fire that enveloped a garage at the rear of 868-870 Memorial Ave. and damaged three nearby duplexes remains under investigation, Smith said.

Starting at $3.90/week.
