Muncy Bridge to open at the end of summer
Muncy’s Carpenter Street Bridge, closed since early spring, is expected to open to traffic by Sept. 1, according to borough officials.
Repair work targeting a deteriorating section of the bridge is scheduled for August, Borough Manager Charles Hall announced at a recent council meeting.
The bridge over Glade Run was open until April after undergoing repairs in the past year to replace a retaining wall.
However, the bridge was closed in April after problems with the span’s deck were discovered.
Councilman Ed Feigles noted that the hope is to make the necessary repairs to the bridge for now.
LIVIC Civil Engineering is to rehabilitate the span at an estimated cost of between $25,000 and $30,000.
“We hope to get five years out of it,” Feigles said.
Eventually, the bridge could be replaced.
In a related matter, council voted to authorize a payment of $51,541 for the initial rehabilitation bridge work.
Council discussed a request from the Muncy Shade Tree Commission to remove a tree posing danger to the public.
The tree is the subject of a dispute between property owners at 217 and 219 W. Penn St.
Hall noted that if the landowner responsible for removing the tree refuses to do it, the borough can proceed to cut it down. The landowner would subsequently be billed for the work.
Council voted to close a section of Sherman Street on Aug. 1 to accommodate a Vineyard Community Activity Center fundraising event.
The street will be shut off from traffic between Penn and Water streets from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day.
Mayor Craig Scruggs asked council to consider an ordinance covering oversight of rental properties.
He noted that the borough, unlike other municipalities, does not have much oversight with rentals.
After a brief discussion, council appointed members to a committee to further explore the matter.
Council approved a change order with Herr Signal & Lighting Co. for street lights work at Penn and Main streets.
Hall noted that wood chipping has begun in the borough and will continue into September.
Residents are reminded that the chipping is meant for tree wood and not wood scraps.
Council met in executive session following the meeting to consider legal matters.
The next council meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 15 at Muncy High School.
