The City of Williamsport is seeking a state transportation fund grant amounting to $796,869 and change.
In order to submit it, City Council recently approved a resolution authorizing the administration to file a Multimodal Transportation Fund grant.
This is to be done through the Commonwealth Financing Authority.
It designates Mayor Derek Slaughter and Melanie Shutt, city grants administrator, to be the officers to execute all documents and agreements between the city and the authority to facilitate and assist in obtaining to handle it for the city.
The grant is to be used for the "Williamsport Transportation Enhancement Project, Phase II."
This is a continuation of a streetscape improvement that is currently underway on West Third Street starting at the intersection with Hepburn Street and moving west, said Scott Williams, assistant director of the city Department of Community and Economic Development/city planner.
Elements of the project include replacement of deteriorated curbs and sidewalks, installation of ADA-compliant pedestrian facilities, brick paver sidewalks, period style street lighting, street trees, pedestrian crosswalks, roadway milling and overlay, and stormwater management improvements.
Phase I of the project, paid for with a previously awarded CFA Multimodal Transportation Fund grant in the amount of $200,000, is currently in design and should be constructed soon. These funds were sufficient to do several hundred feet of roadway, he said.
If Phase II funds are awarded, the city will continue the project west to Center Street, Williams noted.
The intent is to continue seeking funding to reconstruct West Third Street westward to this same standard, he said.
