A Williamsport neighborhood is coming together after a deadly shooting last month.
Kevin Mackey of Memorial Avenue recently told the City Council of efforts to form a neighborhood alliance.
During public comment, he thanked Williamsport Bureau of Police for the quick action officers took at the scene on June 29. The daytime shooting near Memorial Avenue and Lloyd Street later claimed the life of 18-year-old Nasir Kramer, who was pronounced dead at the emergency room. Two other teens, ages 17 and 19, were also wounded.
Mackey said he had family members at the Memorial Park pool and was almost there himself but was running errands.
Between this incident and prior offenses that he cited at a previous council meeting he said he is still concerned for the safety and well being of his family.
Talking with friends and neighbors he found there was a desire to create community alliances that will help keep people informed, and provide free resources as the organization gains steam.
As Mayor Derek Slaughter called for action at all levels of the community, this group is planning to meet at St. Paul Calvary United Methodist Church, 1427 Memorial Ave., at noon on July 25.
"Some of what I hope to see done are several things, which is helping to set up cameras, keeping folks updated on the neighborhood, and coordinating with other resources and groups," Mackey said.
