The experimental or pilot program for bicycle lanes in the City of Williamsport is pedaling forward.
City Council has just awarded construct services for $94,480 using Community Development Block grant funding to Minichi Inc. of Dupont.
"This is for the area in the East End called the "Blue Route," said Bill Scott, city engineer. He added he has used Minichi before and noted they are a good firm.
The Blue Route starts behind Divine Providence Hospital and connects to the Loyalsock Township bike route.
It goes down Sherman Street, goes across Ellinger Street and takes a long run down Lincoln Avenue. It comes down Packer Street and into Brandon Park across a section of Parkwood Street. It goes down Elizabeth Street and over Hughes and Wilson and eventually on to Sherman Street in a loop to connect riders to parks.
The bike lanes are not against the curb and do not affect on street parking, Scott said to a question from Councilman Adam Yoder.
Mayor Derek Slaughter said to a question from Councilwoman Liz Miele the plan is to get this done and expand bike lanes around the city.
"We've got a lot of space on our streets, and I think we can actually carve out real bike lanes on our roads that would be great," Miele said.
