A Williamsport man who is pursuing a disc golf course concept in Brandon Park asked members of City Council to place the proposal on an upcoming agenda for a discussion and a possible vote one way or the other.
Nicholas Saramandich said he recently brought the concept before the Brandon Park Commission, as a courtesy because it is the recommending or advisory body for issues first needing to be addressed at the 43-acre park.
He said he received initial push back on his idea of a proposed limited nine-hole disc golf course that he believes could be designed not to be intrusive or cause a safety hazard for those in the park. His original plan was for 18 holes. Earlier, council leadership told Saramandich said he was told there was a prohibition in writing on golf being played in the park, but he said this should not apply to this form of golf. He also was told there is a safety concern for other patrons of the park.
"It's not that kind of golf," Saramandich said. Disc golf allows players to toss weighted discs into metal baskets, which are like the holes would be on a golf course. Players walk around to each of the holes like they do on a golf course. Several disc golf courses are in the county but not in the city and there is an organization that plays the game locally.
Council President Eric Beiter thanked Saramandich for his time and effort in the presentation and requested he provide correspondence and a record of his discussion he had with the commission.
The commission has yet to formally address the council after hearing Saramandich's presentation.
Saramandich said he is not going to stop his pursuit until there is a formal vote and clarifications on how the park can be used.
"I requested that I get on the agenda for an official vote during next month's council meeting, but I have yet to hear back," he said.
Councilman Jon Mackey suggested Saramandich bring a sample of the equipment for the game with him to the park and play it as he said it is a public park.
