As students head to school, and walk home, the City of Williamsport has begun working with a firm to study ways to create safe streets for them and all segments of the population.
The Safe Streets for All (SS4A) plan is a comprehensive initiative focused on creating a city-wide Comprehensive Road Safety Action Plan.
Backed by a $356,458 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the plan aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries by adopting a Vision Zero approach.
The initiative is designed to deliver small, actionable, and rapid projects that immediately improve multimodal transit, pedestrian safety, and high-risk corridors.
City Council has approved a resolution between the city and Kittelson & Associates Inc. authorizing a professional services agreement for this work.
Major focus will be placed on fixing deficient infrastructure, adding pedestrian crosswalks, paving surfaces, and upgrading intersections to reduce crashes.
Specific attention will be directed toward high-traffic roadways, including Maynard Street and Market Street.
Plans include adding accessible curb cuts, bike lanes, and improving connections to the Susquehanna Riverwalk.
