The streets of south Williamsport will come alive with the sound of music as the 79th annual Mummers’ Parade makes its yearly return to the borough Saturday.
The theme for this year's parade is "Decades of Music."
"It's not a requirement. It's just something fun that we like to throw in if they choose to do it," parade coordinator Lisa Angelo said.
"A couple of the entries that I have, the write-ups are amazing. One of the groups is going to be playing music from 1999. I'm like, that's so exciting," she said.
Since taking over the reigns last year, Angelo said the committee has added a few new members, bringing its total number to ten.
"We also have a new, updated and active Facebook page," she added.
Deviating from previous years, the committee opted to go with a tiered sponsorship system.
"Our top sponsor again this year is legacy sponsor Geisinger, and division one is made up of businesses and entities from South Williamsport," Angelo said.
Each tier comes with its unique perks, Angelo explained.
"For the $300 ones, you get your name listed in the program, social media recognition and the sponsorship recognition for the division that you signed up for," she said, as an example.
Other sponsors include South Williamsport Borough, Bayada Williamsport, Tebbs Bros. Landscaping, T-Ross Brothers Construction and The Potting Bench.
At last count, Angelo said more than 80 participants were scheduled to take part in the 10-division strong lineup, including several new participants, including County Treasurer Cindy Newcomer and Queen Tiadaghton Layla Gallagher.
Returning favorites include the Nittany Highland Pipe Band and the big man in red himself, Santa Claus.
"He'll be in the rear of the parade again, escorted in by the Woodward Township Volunteer Fire Department," Angelo said.
Though she was initially worried about getting participation from local school marching bands due to a competition being held that day, marching bands from South Williamsport, Northern Tioga, Montoursville and Lewisburg school districts are scheduled to perform.
Other musical acts include Trip The Light Party Band and Romeo's Musicians.
The judges' stand will once again be at Dolly's South.
"We decided to keep it there, and they've been great working with us," Angelo said.
Though there was no deadline to enter the parade, programs have already been printed.
Still, Angelo assures anyone still looking to get in on this year's affair that their float will still be announced and eligible to be judged.
While encouraging everyone to come out and enjoy the sites and sounds, Angelo asked that attendees not park in the CVS plaza as establishments housed within it will be open for business.
The parade kicks off at 2 p.m. at East Central Avenue and Market Street.
