The Montoursville Area School Board at its recent meeting approved contracts for work at the district's football and baseball fields.
The board approved replacing the Astroturf at Memorial Stadium with A-Turf at a cost of $595,000.
The contract with A-Turf, Williamsville, N.Y. includes a two-year maintenance agreement.
Superintendent Dan Taormina told the board that A-Turf represents the best option for the stadium's playing surface.
"I recommend A-Turf for the safety of students," he said.
A shock pad beneath the turf surface can help prevent concussions often sustained by football players, according to Taormina.
"Astroturf is what we currently have," he said. "There is no shock beneath it."
A-Turf is also expected to reduce maintenance costs.
Taormina noted the playing surface was badly in need of replacement.
"If we maintain it, we should get 12 years out of it," he said.
The board approved a contract for $41,000 with Armstrong Solutions for upgrades to the varsity baseball field. Work will include excavation and drainage improvements as well as rebuilding the infield and pitcher's mound.
"The bulk of funds are for the excavation," Taormina said.
The work is expected to get under way soon, he added.
In personnel matters, the board approved the resignations of Theresa Hill, nurse, and Mary Bubb, building security.
The next board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27 at the high school.
