Howard Thomas Ulmer, 74, of Montoursville, passed away on Jan. 4, 2022, at The Gatehouse.
He was born July 8, 1947, in Williamsport, son of the late Howard and Catherine Ulmer and grew up in Montoursville.
Tom graduated from Montoursville High School, class of 1966. He excelled in football, having tryouts with the Philadelphia Eagles, but loved all sports, played basketball, baseball, track and golf and hit the first home run at Lamade Stadium. After high school, he played football at Lees McRae College in North Carolina. After college, he was in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Riley Kanas as military police. In Aug. 1969, he married his high school sweetheart, the former Susan A. Doebler and together they have four children. Tom loved coaching and was a coach of the State Champion 1985 Little League. He was a member of Montoursville Presbyterian Church, Montoursville Kiwanis and Eugene Grafius American Legion Post #104. He worked at GTE Sylvania, Montour Auto, Philips Supply and Spitler Funeral Home. Tom loved playing golf with his boys and playing in a pool league with his daughter, Megan. He also enjoyed trips to Disney World and camping with his family.
Predeceased by his parents; and his sister, Barbara Hawk.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years; three sons, Todd Thomas (Rachael) Ulmer of Montoursville, Christopher Matthew Ulmer of Montoursville, Justin Michael (Tina) Ulmer of Linden; one daughter, Megan Ja-Ann of Montoursville; nine grandchildren, Calen, Brianna, Alexa, Shea, McKada, Cohen, Colby, Jayden and Kason.
There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Montoursville Presbyterian Church, 900 Elm Street, Montoursville, with Rev. David S. Smith officiating. A burial will follow at Montoursville Cemetery. A viewing for family and friends will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
