On Feb. 21, 2020 George Walter Reed Jr. resident of Palm Coast, Florida (formerly of Williamsport) quietly passed away with his wife Jeanne and daughter Virginia by his side.
Born in Altoona, Pa. on June 15, 1932, Walter was the son of Jessie H. Strunk Reed and George Walter Reed Sr. Walter is survived by his wife Jeanne and their blended family of, Scott Reed, Melissa Black (husband Michael Drummy), Steven Reed (wife Cici Glass), Virginia Breuder Roseman (husband Jay) and Allison Breuder Savoy (husband Marcus). Walter was predeceased by a daughter Cindy Reed Roesgen.
Walt graduated from Altoona High School class of 1950 and went on to attend Penn State University then graduating from Shippensburg University in 1954 with a business degree. After graduation Reed went to work for Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania; however, soon thereafter was inducted into the United States Army in 1955. Completing basic training and additional schooling, he was assigned to the White House Army Signal Agency as a cryptographic analyst. Reed enjoyed sharing many memories with his family about his time at the White House and Camp David during his years of service.
Reed returned to work at the phone company until 1961 when an opportunity to join Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner & Smith became available. Reed retired from Merrill in 1991 as Regional Vice President. After retirement he was actively involved in the formation of several private businesses including Regulation Scanning, United Realty Company, CSR Inc, Uplink Inc and Margin Point Inc.
Always involving himself in the community affairs of his home in Williamsport, Lycoming County; he served as Director and Vice President of the United Way, Director of AAA, Officer and Director of Family and Children Services, Director and Trustee of the local YMCA and also served on the Corporate Advisory Board of the Pennsylvania College of Technology.
Walt was a member of the former Ross Club, Texas and Blockhouse Fish and Game Club, The Oaks Club and The Wheel Club. He loved fishing, sailing and most of all baseball (having played in high school and college and professionally for Johnstown in the Middle Atlantic League
As many of Reed's cherished friends have pre-deceased him, there will be no formal memorial service; however, a private gathering will be held at the convenience of the family. For those remembering Walter the family suggests a gift of their choice to a favorite charity. His included the Lycoming County SPCA and Lycoming County YMCA.
