Richard D. Johnson

Richard D. Johnson, 79, of Williamsport, died Jan. 1, 2023 at ProMedica, Jersey Shore.

He was born Sept. 24, 1943, in Williamsport, a son of the late Lewis “Pop” and Evelyn “Gram” (Brewer) Johnson.

Dick was a graduate of Williamsport High School, class of 1961, where he played football, basketball, and golf. He was a U.S. Army veteran, pool shooter, card player, and an avid golfer, winning many tournaments. In May of 1969, he teamed with Arnold Palmer at the Williamsport Country Club for an exhibition match. He was a salesman for Van Campen Motors, and owned Dick Johnson Auto World. In 1980, he helped start McCarthy Cabs and stayed on with the company through many transitions, including new ownership being Billtown Cabs. He drove cab in Williamsport, Scranton, York, and Harrisburg, and loved every minute of it.

He was a member of The Keystone League and Eagles Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Gregg Johnson; brothers, David, Louis, Robert, and Frank; and sister, Ruth Ann Snyder.

Surviving is his second wife, of 30 years, the former Margaret Neylon; son, Richard (Anne) Johnson; daughter, Becky (Scott) Yeagle; two stepchildren, Wendy (Scott) Heatley and Missie Rabert; brother, James E. (Irene) Johnson; sisters, Joan E. Rothrock, Kathy M. (David) Shipton, and Jeannie L. Murphy; and two grandchildren, Ben and Alyssa Johnson.

A life celebration will be held at Johnson’s Café, Broad St., Montoursville, Monday Jan. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial contributions to the Richard “Dick” Johnson Memorial Scholarship at the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania, which will support a golfer at Williamsport Area High School.
