Francis “Frank” Joseph Myers III

Frank Myers passed away peacefully in his Williamsport home on Saturday, June 17, 2023. He was 76 years old.

Frank was born on April 15, 1947, in Fort Benning, Ga. His father was a career Army officer, so Frank spent most of his youth as an “Army brat,” moving from place to place. Frank attended Pennsylvania State University, graduating in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. While at Penn State, he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, and met his future wife, Mary “Letty” Smith. They were married on Sept. 15, 1971, in a small family ceremony on campus.

Frank began his career as an elementary physical education teacher in the mid-1970s. He spent most of his career at Stevens Elementary School in the Williamsport Area School District. He was beloved by generations of students for making gym class educational, and more importantly, fun. Walking into his classes, one was always struck by the laughter and joy that occurred there each day. Frank could hardly go anywhere in Williamsport throughout his life without children and adults crying out, “hey Mr. Myers!” He retired after thirty years in 2007.

In his retirement, Frank enjoyed golfing, visiting his son and volunteering at Williamsport Area School District sporting events.

Frank was a devoted father throughout his life. To say that he was always there for his children would be a profound understatement. When his newborn son, Joe, would fuss all night, Frank would hold him and sing “Jobey Jobey sleepin’ all the time.” The song worked and Joe went to sleep. His daughter, Nissa, loved playing restaurant with him, where he would always make the waitress giggle. He never said “no” when Joe wanted to go play baseball or tennis at the park. When Joe was ten and loved the movie Dick Tracy, he would take him to the James V. Brown Library after breakfast and read old Dick Tracy comic strips in the microfiche room for hours.

Nissa followed in Frank’s footsteps, and became a beloved elementary school teacher at Becht Elementary in Loyalsock Township, benefiting from his mentorship. When Joe was deployed to Iraq with the Army, he would walk down to the post box everyday with Letty and mail him a letter. His final act of devotion came last summer when he selflessly spent three weeks in Virginia house-sitting for Joe and his wife, Alexandra, taking care of their beloved dog and cat while they went on their honeymoon. These are only a few examples of his devotion as a father.

Frank is survived by his wife of 51 years, Letty Myers; son, Francis “Joe” Myers IV and daughter-in-law, Alexandra Millson-Myers, of Virginia, and her parents, Barry and Melanie Millson, of Kentucky; brothers, James Mullins, of Panama City Beach, Fla., and Patrick Myers, of Olympia, Wash.; sisters, Debra Lundberg, of Marysville, Wash., and Maureen Highsmith, of Lacey, Wash. Frank was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Nissa Deanne Myers in 2001; and brother, Charles Love Mullins V in 2017.

A celebration of life will be held at a future date in the northern Virginia area. Please contact McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, (formerly Spitler funeral home), if you have interest in attending.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Mommy and Me Rescue (mommyandmerescue.com) out of Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania. Frank was a devoted animal lover all his life, and adopted one of his last great companions, a disabled Chihuahua named Bobo, from this animal rescue service.

May it be said, “well done, Frank. Be thou at peace.”
