Gary R. Smithgall

Gary R. Smithgall of Montoursville, 71, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2023 at UPMC Williamsport surrounded by his wife and sons.

As a son of the late Merrill Smithgall and the late Mary (Entz) Smithgall, he entered this world at the same hospital on April 3, 1952. Gary met Arlene Schwartz in 1978 and wed in 1985; they were devoted partners for well over four decades.

Gary's many skills and mechanical aptitude led him to work at Sylvania, he owned and operated his crankshaft grinding business, and culminated with Lycoming Engines. Throughout his life, Gary enjoyed all things motorized & unique: a turbodiesel Blazer, Wankel-powered snowmobile, shooting brake Volvo, the last big block Chevy, at the time, the world's fastest production motorcycle and, of course, Mopar or no car.

Gary loved spending time with family and friends; enjoying the family cabin, especially during deer season and encouraging his sons with their outdoor activities and Boy Scouts. Gary enjoyed driving throughout central Pa. to dine at off-the-beaten-path haunts with his wife and friends. The longer the drive, the better the food!

Gary is survived by his wife Arlene S. Smithgall; two sons, Mark Smithgall, of The Woodlands, Tx, Kurt Smithgall, of Black Hawk, Co; and a brother, Steven Smithgall, of Easley, Sc.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Montoursville Presbyterian Church, 900 Elm St. Montoursville, with Rev. Paul Smith officiating. Friends may call from 9:30 – 11 a.m. at the church on Tuesday, with a reception following the service. All are welcome.

The family will provide the flowers and suggest memorial contributions to be made in his name to BSA Troop 21, Faith United Methodist Church, 700 Fairview Drive Montoursville, PA, 17754.

Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.mccartythomas.com.
