Max Dean Hugar, 79, passed away on Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, at home with his loving wife and family by his side. He was born July 3, 1944, at Philipsburg State General Hospital to the late Paul C. and Gladys (Lucas) Hugar.
Max grew up in Keewaydin, where he attended the Keewaydin one-room school. He was a 1963 graduate of Clearfield Area Senior High School. Upon graduation, he took several courses at Pennsylvania State University in agriculture.
As a child, he delivered the daily newspaper to his community and was a member of the 4H Club, where he won many awards for his beekeeping skills. It was here he would develop his love of gardening and farming, along with working beside his beloved grandparents at their farm in Keewaydin.
As a youth, he was an involved member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Karthaus.
Max operated a Dairy Diner in Williamsport for a period of time. It was here that he would meet a customer, who would become his future wife. On Dec. 14, 1968, he married Loretta (Cupp) Hugar in Linden.
Max was always a very hard worker, working on his farm alongside his wife and children while still working at Strohmann's, where he retired from after 33 years.
There was nothing that would not grow under Max's care, whether it was vegetables or flowers. His talents were many as he was also a good cook and could easily preserve the huge harvests from his garden.
He loved auctions and yard sales and finding the perfect treasure.
Surviving in addition to his wife are five children, William Hugar and wife, Cynthia, of Montgomery, Joseph Hugar, of Montgomery, Gerald Hugar and fiancée, Melissa Bowersox, of Watsontown, Lorraine Hugar, of Hughesville, and Timothy Hugar and wife, Danielle, of Montgomery. He also has nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his dog, Penny.
In addition, he is survived by his sister, Nancy Hugar Verost; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas, of Pittsburgh; and a sister, Jeanette Hugar Larson, of Hyde.
Max lived a full life doing what he loved and he will be missed.
