Howard Cowles

Howard Cowles, 100, long time resident of Loyalsock Township, most recently of Hinesburg Vt. passed at home on March 4, 2024. He was born in Williamsport to H Clifford and Mary (Sheridan) Cowles.

Howard was preceded in death by Betty, his wife of 64 years, and his son Richard (Cheryl) Cowles. Howard is survived by their children Krista Willett, Russell Cowles, Lisa (Charley) Hooper, Kim Crossen and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He worked as an engineer at Lukens Steel, Armstrong Cork and The West Company, Montgomery Plastics Molding Division. He owned the Carvel Ice Cream Store on the Golden Strip through the 1980's and early 1990's. He maintained a lifelong love of all things ice cream.

He attended St Luke Lutheran Church for most of his life and enjoyed singing along even when attending on-line. He loved the outdoors and joined Troop 12 at St Luke in 1936, staying with scouting throughout high school. He was scoutmaster of Troop 24 in Lancaster, and a Committee Member for Troop 38 at St. Ann Church.

Howard, along with his beloved wife Betty, was always ready for a new adventure, especially if it involved travel and learning new things. He considered living in Leighton Place for several years another adventure with good food and challenging activities. He finished life living with his oldest daughter, where he continued to enjoy treats, especially ice cream, and besting his family and caregivers at cards.

A funeral service will be held at St Luke Lutheran Church, 1400 Market St. Williamsport Pa 17701 on May 11th at 11 a.m. Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the funeral.
