Martin E. Gilbody

Martin E. Gilbody, born March 19, 1950, of Williamsport, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 30, after a brief illness.

Martin was a 1974 literature graduate of Lock Haven University. He was also active in the Russian Club while studying at Lycoming College for a brief time. From an early age and through life, he was a student of languages, including Spanish, Latin and especially French.

As a voracious reader, Martin’s favorite novelist was Vladimir Nabokov. In younger years, you could run into him hanging out in The Otto Bookstore, looking for his next work.

Martin was an extraordinary audiophile. As such, he frequented Stereo House and Robert M. Sides Family Music Center. He had collections of vinyl and tapes of jazz, rock, blues and pop artists. His favorite band was The Grateful Dead.

For more than 40 years, Martin worked as a transport orderly in the operating room of Williamsport Hospital (now UPMC).

Martin is preceded in death by his father, Donald I. Gilbody (1984); mother, Sarah D. Gilbody (2017); and sister, Susan Gilbody (1950).

Surviving are siblings, Mary (Robert) Ekblom, of Keene, N.H., Margaret (Robert) Johle of Williamsport, Steve (Carol) Gilbody of Clarks Summitt, Joan (Scott) Keeler of Williamsport, Phillip Gilbody of State College, Donald Gilbody of Waltham, Mass., Gerald Gilbody of Trout Run; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will not be holding a formal viewing, but will honor Martin’s life privately.
