Jay M. “Bud” Haynes
Jay M. “Bud” Haynes, 84, of Pennsdale, died Thursday, May 1, 2025.
Born October 11, 1940, in Muncy, he was a son of the late Jay Houseknecht and Viola (Wishard) Confer. He was a graduate of Hughesville High School where he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame for Baseball, Basketball, and Football.
After high school, Bud was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals into their minor league farm system. Then in 1963, he was drafted by the US Army and honorably served as a Military Policeman on Ellis Island. During Bud’s lifetime, he was always involved with Baseball. He loved to play baseball from childhood until late into his 40’s when he played for the Hughesville Travelers. He also coached baseball from Little League, American Legion, High School and Travelers in the Hughesville Area. Bud was instrumental in restarting the HHS Baseball team in 1986. He also umpired baseball and was a PIAA basketball referee for many years.
He worked and retired from both GTE Sylvania Montoursville and the Postal Service, Muncy, Pa. Bud was both an avid collector of baseball memorabilia and enjoyed watching local baseball games. He was a lifelong NY Yankees fan and enjoyed going to their games with both Friends and Family.
Surviving are two daughters, Leslie (Timothy) Kepner of Hughesville; and Stephanie (Stephen) Budman of Muncy; a son Jeffrey (Wendy) Haynes of Bel Air, MD; six grandchildren, Kyle Kepner, Alexis Strouse, Korbin Kepner, Gina Budman, Emma Haynes, and Sean Budman; four great grandchildren, Nova, Remi, Sage, and Ozzy; and a sister Donna (Fred) Bieber of Turbotville. Bud is also survived by many close friends and classmates who were like family to him. He was predeceased by both his parents, his stepfather, Grover Haynes and his granddaughter Emily Budman.
There is a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 16, 2025 at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E Water St, Hughesville.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2025, at The Beacon: A United Methodist Church, 146 S. Main St. Hughesville, with Pastor Kevin St. Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Twin Hills Memorial Park, with graveside military honors accorded by the US Army and combined local military organizations.
The Family will provide flowers, but any memorial contributions may be made in Bud’s memory to the Hughesville Baseball Booster Club at 349 Cemetery St, Hughesville, Pa 17737.
