John Eldred Herman, 75, passed away unexpectedly on May 1, 2025, in Mesa, Arizona. Born on June 18, 1949, in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late John Schuler Herman and Jane Alice (Kerlin) Herman.
John was a 1967 graduate of Milton Area High School and went on to earn his teaching degree from Bloomsburg University in 1972. He later received his master's degree from Bucknell University in 1986. Over the course of more than three decades in public education, John made a lasting impact as a social studies teacher, school administrator, and later, as an adjunct professor. He also honorably served his country as an officer in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, retiring in 1991.
Throughout John's life, he enjoyed coaching, serving as a Boy Scout leader, exploring his family's genealogy, hunting and spending time in Arizona during the winter months. Among his favorite traditions were annual family vacations to Disney World, and above all, he cherished time spent with his loved ones.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Christina (Campana) Herman, and by his five beloved children, Christopher Herman and his wife Julie, Jennifer Herman, Philip Herman and his wife, Lindsay, Amanda Herman and her wife, Lauren, and Emily Herman, as well as by his first wife, Carolyn (Phillips) Herman. John was a proud grandfather to Jaden Wagner, Quincy Herman, Brennan Herman, Eli Herman, and Judson Herman. He leaves behind five siblings and many nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
A visitation will be held on May 29, 2025, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front Street, Milton, PA. A memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. at the same location. Graveside services with military honors will be held privately at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
