Maria Loheac Gustafson

Maria Loheac Gustafson, 94, of Williamsport, PA, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family on May 16, 2025.

Maria was born on May 12, 1931 to Augustine and Louis Loheac at the French Hospital of New York City. She graduated from the College of Mount Saint Vincent with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 1953. While working at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, CA as a surgical nurse, she met Danny Gustafson, whom she married in 1957. Maria and Danny eventually settled with their four daughters in Williamsport, PA, where Maria worked at Williamsport Hospital School as a nursing instructor and then as an OB nurse. Danny passed unexpectedly in 1979.

Maria volunteered extensively with organizations like the James V. Brown Library, the League of Women Voters, and the Faculty Wives of Lycoming College. In retirement, she enjoyed tracing her genealogy as far back as the 1500s, with trips to view historical records in France and Sweden. She was an active member at Annunciation Parish (now St. Joseph the Worker), joined weekly bridge, mah-jong and knitting groups, and maintained a beautiful flower garden. She was a loyal friend, a devoted mother, and an indomitable spirit.

Maria is survived by her daughters, Ruth Gustafson, Christine Hoffman, Julia (Andreas) Wagner and Catherine (Jim) Schunder; grandchildren, Danielle Hoffman, Henry (Michele) Hoffman, Allison (Steve) Gramley, Benedict Hoffman (Chelsea Thompson), Dan Schunder, Amelia (Simon) Stasko, Greta Schunder, and Samuel, Sarah, and Peter Wagner; and great-grandchildren, Theodore, Nicholas, and Oliver Hoffman, Beatrix Hoffman-Zabielski, and Isabelle Gramley. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Danny Gustafson, and her brother Henry Loheac.

Family and friends are invited to greet the family on Saturday, July 26, 2025 from 10 to 11 a.m. in the vestibule at Saint Joseph the Worker Parish, 702 W 4th St, Williamsport, PA 17701. Her Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maria's name to the James V. Brown Library and the League of Women Voters.
