Thomas Marshall Hopkins, 77, of Montoursville, PA passed away peacefully in the early morning on May 25, 2025. Known for his commitment to his family and dedication to his students who knew him as “Herr Hop,” Marshall enthusiastically shared his love of the German language and culture with generations of Lock Haven High School students, instilling in many a love of the German language and travel that continues to this day.

Marshall graduated from Lycoming College with a B.A. in German in 1969, and completed a Master’s Degree in German Literature at Penn State in 1974. A dedicated teacher, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1995 and spent a year teaching in Germany. While there, he enjoyed adventuring around Europe with his family, establishing many international friendships, and drinking excellent beer. In his later years, Marshall loved travelling with Lynne and their family, including trips to England, the Baltic region, Greece, and throughout the United States.

His grandchildren will remember him as “Papa” or “Hop;” he was fun-loving and supportive, always ready to laugh or offer a piece of advice. Bike rides, trips to Disney, and time at the beach were always big hits.

Growing up as a PK (preacher’s kid), Marshall’s family moved frequently, but the experiences instilled in him a dedication to Christ and the church that continued throughout his life. He was an active member of his church family and loved singing in the choir.

He is survived by his loving wife Lynne and his children, Mark K. Hopkins (Lisa), Sarah E. Hopkins (David Gosse) and Amy Bolt (Jason); grandchildren Eli Hopkins, Jacob Hopkins, Ian Gosse, Adelaide Hopkins, Alexander Bolt, Maxwell Gosse, and Jenson Bolt.

A service to honor Marshall’s life will be held at Pine Street United Methodist Church, 441 Pine Street, Williamsport PA on Saturday, May 31 at 10 AM, with light refreshments to follow.

The family has established the T. Marshall Hopkins Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Language Studies in his honor.
