Winifred M. Odell

Winifred M. Odell, 98, of Hughesville, PA, died Wednesday, August 27, at the Muncy Valley Skilled Nursing Unit. She passed away peacefully with family by her side.
Born June 26, 1927, in Strawbridge, she was the daughter of Leon C. Myers Sr. and Jane Holmes Myers. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in Strawbridge through eighth grade and graduated from Sonestown High School in 1945. She also attended Susquehanna University.
Winifred married George Odell on October 7, 1949, in a candlelight ceremony amid a background of white mums, pompoms and pink roses at her family home. They were married for 56 years until George’s death in 2006.
George and Winifred lived throughout their life together in the house they built, surrounded by friends and family. Their son Tom was born in 1955. Winnie and George belonged to several local antique automobile clubs and enjoyed taking trips with the Ridgerunners Travel Club. Together they ran several businesses in Hughesville, including Odell Business Machines on Main Street. Winifred worked as a notary public for many years, facilitating countless business transactions for strangers and friends from the desk in their living room.
Winifred was a long-time member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hughesville, where she volunteered her time. She remained active throughout her life, walking to the grocery store, church, and other places around town even into her 90s. Winnie was an avid gardener and knitter, and she loved chatting about the weather, watching the hummingbirds at her bird feeders, flying kites, baking, and working puzzles. She enjoyed the finer things in life – never turning down a sweet treat or a chance to eat her favorite Wendy’s chili.
Winifred is survived by her son, Thomas Odell (Denice Celestino) of Hughesville; grandchildren, Erin Frymoyer (Jeremy) of Selinsgrove, PA and Tracy Crowley (Ian) of Chapel Hill, NC; and great-grandchildren, Owen and Spencer Crowley. She was predeceased by her siblings, Leon Myers and Marian Glennie, and her husband George.
