The Rev. Sheila Anne Core

The Rev. Sheila Anne Core, 71, of Williamsport went to be with the Lord, on Friday, September 26, 2025.
Born December 5, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Clinton and Ruth Evelyn (Stublefield) Core. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John A. Core II and David C. Core. She is survived by a nephew, David Sypolt (Teri) of Kingwood, WV and cousin, Deborah Core.
Sheila was a lifelong scholar and devoted servant of Christ whose passion for learning guided her life’s work. A 1972 graduate of Morgantown High School, she went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature from Bethany College in West Virginia, followed by a Master of Science in Library Science and Literacy from the University of Illinois. She later pursued advanced studies, including certifications in educating adults and adult education, and earned a master’s degree in English Literature and Language from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. Sheila also studied at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, and concluded her academic journey with a Master of Divinity degree from Lexington Theological Seminary in Kentucky. Her career reflected her deep love of learning: she worked in community libraries, served as a librarian at Surrey College, and later became reference librarian and Dean of Learning Resources. Answering her call to ministry, Sheila faithfully served for many years as pastor of First Christian Church in Alba. She also held the titles of Elder Emeritus and Pastor Emeritus at First Church of Christ-Disciples. Above all, Sheila lived as a committed disciple of Christ, enriching lives through her wisdom, compassion, and faith.
A funeral service to honor Rev. Sheila’s life will be held 2 p.m., Monday, October 6, at First Church of Christ – Disciples, 1250 Almond St, Williamsport, PA 17701. A private burial will be held in East Oak Grove Cemetery, West Virginia.
