Spencer Blue Vincent, 85, of Hughesville, Pa., and formerly of Benton, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2025.
He was born June 13, 1940, in Danville, Pa., the eighth and final child of Irene Ritter (Blue) (1903-1994) and Robert Taylor Vincent Sr. (1900-1983). Shortly after his birth, the family moved to a home on Park Street in Benton. While growing up, he worked in his parents' well known butcher shop and grocery store on the backside of their property near the high school.
Spencer attended Benton area schools and graduated with the Class of 1958.
After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was honorably discharged as a Corporal (E-4) in 1962. He served at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and the USMC Headquarters in Arlington, Va. He was very proud of his Marine Corps heritage and supported many USMC fundraisers, events and charities during his lifetime.
Upon his discharge, he returned to Benton, where he purchased and operated the popular Kozy Korner Restaurant. In late afternoons and evenings, he also worked at the Benton Peat Bog on Zaners Bridge Road near Bendertown. He eventually sold Kozy Korner and went to work full time for his brother, Robert T. Vincent Jr., in the construction and golf course-building business. For the next 20-plus years the brothers built or refurbished over 25 golf courses in the Pa./Md./N.J. region, finishing up with the construction of the Mill Race Golf Course and Camping Resort in Benton.
In the early 1980s, he worked for LaBar Industries as Director of Maintenance and Special Projects. He also started a wicker business called The Veranda House of Wicker, and later the Ye Olde Basket Shop. Spencer operated in local malls, with store locations in Bloomsburg, Berwick, Danville and Hughesville. He also sold merchandise at various fairs in Pa. and N.Y., successfully running the business until failing health forced him to retire in 2011.
Spencer enjoyed hunting and was a longtime member of the West Creek Rod & Gun Club, serving many years as the Secretary/Treasurer. He was also a member of the American Legion, Highland Lake 40 & 8 Club, Jaycees, and the U.S. Marine Corps League. He enjoyed collecting donations for the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Christmas charity drive for many years.
In addition to his parents, Spencer was preceded in death by siblings Gladys I. Vincent, Robert T. Vincent Jr., Natalie J. Levesque, Marjorie R. Bassett, and James E. Vincent.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, the former Mary Ann (Rine) Proof of Hughesville; a sister, Emily "Sis" Curry of Danville; and a brother, Thomas E. Vincent of Puerto Rico. He is also survived by five children from his previous marriage to Martha Semos: Francis C. Vincent (Silvia) of West Chester, Pa.; Paul E. Vincent (Kerry) of Stillwater, Pa.; Andrew T. Vincent (Sunsirey) of Shickshinny, Pa.; Christopher L. Vincent (Amy) of Sharpsburg, Md.; and Rosemaire (John) Kellogg of Little Meadows, Pa.; as well as six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A public visitation will be held Thursday, Dec. 11, 2025, from 11 a.m. to noon at McCarty- Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water Street, Hughesville. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Benton Cemetery with Pastor Chris Long of Benton U.M.C. officiating.
