Mary Boschert Penfield

Mary Boschert Penfield, 102, died peacefully on Friday January 9, 2026, surrounded by family, knowing she was deeply loved.

She was born on December 14, 1923, in St. Marys PA, to Richard M. and Rose Hammer Boschert. Upon graduation from St. Marys High School, she went to work at St. Marys National Bank. At age 21, to support the war effort, and while her parents were away, Mary snuck-off to enlist in the WAVES and was stationed at the US Naval Research Laboratory, Washington D.C.

In 1946, Mary married John W. Penfield, who she met on a blind date and knew from the start was the love of her life. They moved to Pittsburgh, where John graduated from the University of Pittsburgh Dental School. In 1953, they moved to Williamsport PA.

While supporting her husband’s dental practice and raising a family of five children, Mary was active in several organizations, including a term as president of the Women’s Dental Association, the Junior League, the Williamsport Country Club, and the Bridge Club. Mary rejoined the workforce in the 1970s, supporting the medical practice of Robert Yasui, M.D. In retirement, John and Mary spent many happy years in Sunset Beach, NC, where they were proud founders of the Sea Trail Chapel on The Green. She enjoyed golf, bowling, bridge, crossword puzzles, and was an avid reader, an incredible pie maker, and Jeopardy fanatic. Her faith, love, and humor were deep and unending.

Mary is survived by her five children, Richard (Nancy), Brian (Susan), Thomas (Amie), John (Lenore) and Kathryn (Gene Weigle); fourteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and dear friends Crystal and Kim Penfield. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years in 1997; her sister Alice Phelan and two brothers, Fred and Gus Boschert; and granddaughter Cecile Weigle.

A woman of devout faith, Mary was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, where a public Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on February 13, at 10 a.m., followed by a private graveside and family gathering.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial contributions be made in Mary’s name to the James V Brown Library, 19 E 4th St., Williamsport PA 17701.
