Arnold Smith
Arnold Smith passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026. Born on March 23, 1930, in Muncy, PA, he was the son of the late Sallie and Raymond Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Stacy Dudas, his sister, Evelyn Smith McCoy, and brother, Larue Smith. He married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn M. (Sones) Smith in 1951. He is survived by his wife and his son, Todd Smith as well as his sister, Delores (Smith) McCoy of Montoursville, PA, and one grandchild, Alyssa Kelly, and her husband, Harland Trimble, of Palm Bay, FL. Arnold graduated from Muncy High School in 1948. He worked for three years as a mechanical design draftsman at Sprout-Waldron Company before enlisting in the US Air Force. During his four years in the Air Force, his assignments as a draftsman, artist and Illustrator, included many Air Force bases. He was promoted to the rank Tech Sergeant. Arnold earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State in 1959 and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from New York University in 1961. Arnold was a licensed Professional Engineer in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He was employed by Bell Labs in Whippany, NJ for 36 years and was a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff. In 1996, he moved with his wife to South Carolina and had their dream house built on Hartwell Lake, Anderson, SC. In 2015, Arnold and his wife moved to the City of Anderson. During his first 10 years at Bell Labs, he designed components for missile guidance systems that included short assignments at Cape Canaveral, FL and Burlington, NC. His remaining 26 years at Bell Labs concentrated on design and administration for products and equipment used in the outside telephone plant by the Bell System Companies. Arnold has 24 patents, has written several articles that were published in both National and Bell Labs magazines. In 1985, he presented a technical paper in London at the International Symposium on the use of Plastics in Telecommunications. He was awarded the National Ray Blain Award from Telephony magazine in 1991 for his achievements in developing innovative products for the Bell System. He is a member of five Honor Societies. Arnold and Evelyn traveled extensively in the U.S, Europe, the Caribbean and Asia. They were huge Penn State fans and traveled to all of Penn States’ home football games in their motor home for many years. Arnold’s ashes will be interred at M.J. “Dolly” Cooper Veteran’s Cemetery, Anderson, SC. Arnold had a loving wife for 74 years and he had a long, successful, healthy and happy life. Do not mourn his death but rather, CELEBRATE HIS LIFE!
