David J. Ward
David J. Ward, of Summerville, South Carolina, passed away at the age of 85 after a long journey with Alzheimer’s disease. Born on February 28, 1940, he was the son of the late David W. Ward and Mary Kaye Ward and a graduate of South Williamsport High School in 1958.
David shared 47 loving years of marriage with his wife, Linda, his partner in life and adventure. He was a proud father to his beloved sons, David (Bobbi) of Hughesville, Pennsylvania, Brent (Angie) of Frederick, Maryland and Scott of Richmond, Virginia; and to his “darling daughter,” Kristen (Mike) of Summerville, South Carolina. He was also a dear brother to Richard (Ramona) of Tyrone, Pennsylvania and a loving grandfather to Ethan, Eli, Gracie, Jacob, Ella, Jack, Anna, Max, Finn, and Will.
A graduate of The Pennsylvania State University, David earned a degree in 1962 and later completed his graduate studies at Indiana University. He dedicated his career to education, retiring from the Williamsport Area School District after 38 years of service, where he worked as both a math and science teacher and the district’s Director of Technology.
David loved the outdoors and passed that love on to his children through fishing, camping, hiking, and rock climbing. He and Linda traveled extensively throughout the United States in their camper and also enjoyed international travel. A man of faith and service, David served in various positions throughout his church life and enjoyed volunteering. His interests included photography, birding, watching Penn State football with his grandsons, and fixing just about anything that needed repair.
David will be remembered for his steady presence, gentle spirit, and deep love for his family. He found joy in learning, faith, and the beauty of the natural world, and he taught those around him to do the same. As John Denver wrote, “There’s a peace I have found in the quiet of the hills.”
A celebration of life will be held this summer in one of David’s favorite places, Pine Creek State Park. Details will be shared at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in David’s honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Organization or a charity of your choice.
