Mary A. Sholder
Mary A. Sholder, 102, of Williamsport, passed away peacefully at The Williamsport Home, on Feb. 23, 2026.
She was born in Williamsport on Jan. 22, 1924, a daughter to the late Edward G. and Florence M. (Wenner) Shurer.
Mary was a 1942 graduate of St. Mary’s High School. She was a lifelong member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, and was one of their oldest members. She often volunteered with their Activities Association, helping with the yearly carnival.
Mary worked at Divine Providence Hospital in the business office, retiring twice after returning at the office’s request. After her retirement, she continued volunteering at the hospital and through her church and went on to volunteer at St. Boniface and Bishop Neuman Schools. She also was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Ladies Auxiliary.
She and her husband, Det. Lt. Charles J. Sholder celebrated 27 years of marriage before his passing in 1971.
Mary is survived by children, James R. (Elaine) Sholder, of Devon, Stephen C. (Diane) Sholder, of Williamsport, Richard J. (Marysia) Sholder, of Watsontown, Eileen M. (Robert) Frey, of Adamstown, Charlene M. Cannon, of Williamsport; and Joanne E. (Kevin) Pompeo, of Williamsport; Son-in-Law, Robert Greenawalt; grandchildren, Amy (Brad) Shober, Kerry (Shawn) Gable, Matthew (Janice) Greenawalt, Jeffrey (Stefanie) Greenawalt, Jaime (Channing) Boswell, Laura Sholder, Elizabeth (Dan) Himmer, Meghan (Vince) Mach, Daniel Sholder, Emily (Garrett) Albert, Lyndsay (Corey) Weaver, TJ Cannon Jr., Sean (Caylen) Cannon, Makenzie Cannon, Kristen (Pat) Menges, Brad Pompeo, Brooke (Ben) Wise, Nick (Skye) Pompeo, Stephen (Marleigh) Williams, Krysia (Eric) Zeigler, Amaraja Sholder, and Natasia (Sawyer) Armstrong; 29 great-grandchildren with two on the way; 11 great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family in the area.
In addition to her parents and husband, Det. Lt. Charles J. Sholder, Mary is preceded in death by daughter, Karen L. Greenawalt; grandson Kevin C. Greenawalt; Son-in-Law Timothy J. Cannon; as well as siblings, Edward Shurer, Bernadine Shurer, Delores Oldham, John Shurer, and Joseph Shurer.
The family will receive friends and family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27, 2026, at the Crouse Funeral Home, 133 E Third St., Williamsport PA 17701.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 326 Washington Blvd., Williamsport PA 17701. Burial to follow at St. Boniface Church Cemetery.
