James L. Stopper
James L. Stopper, 94, of Williamsport, passed peacefully at The Gatehouse on March 17, 2026, while surrounded by his family.
He was born in Williamsport on October 14, 1931, a son of Albert C. Stopper and Anna A. (Deitrich) Stopper.
Jim was a graduate of the former St. Mary’s High School, earned his undergraduate from LaSalle University and his Master’s degree from Catholic University.
Jim was an active member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish. He belonged to the Lycoming County Genealogical Society and the German Club. He served in the US Army and was an FBI agent early in his career. Jim went on to become the Director of Lycoming County Children and Youth Services for which he served for over 30 years.
His wife of 63 years, Eleanor A. (Cummings) Stopper, died May 25, 2024.
Surviving are their children, James A. (Elise) of Williamsport, Kathleen A. of West Milton, Michael A. (Laura) of Virginia Beach, Va, John P. (Rachel) of Mountain Top, Thomas A. (Melissa) of New Columbia, Matthew F. of Milton, Francis J. (Jessica) of Allentown; 17 grandchildren, Michael, Alexander, Jacob, Sarah, Nicole, Julia, Amanda, Matthew, Michelle, Danielle, Charles Jr., Audrey, Benjamin, Anthony, Harrison, Graham and Olivia; two great grandchildren, Wyatt and Ashton.
In addition to his parents and wife Eleanor, a son, Charles E. Stopper; grandson, Samuel J. Stopper; brother, Albert M. Stopper and sister, Jean S. Bastian all preceded him in death.
There will be no visitation, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m., Monday, March 23, 2026 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 326 Washington Blvd., Williamsport with his pastor, Rev. David W. Bechtel officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Wildwood Cemetery.
