Diane M. Smith

Diane M. Smith of New Paltz, N.Y., passed away peacefully on March 30, 2026, at the age of 84.

She was born on Oct. 4, 1941, to George and Henrietta Nau Smith, of Williamsport. Diane was a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School, and earned her BA degree from Marillac College in St. Louis, Mo.

Diane was devoted to working with children with special needs, both at St. Christopher’s Home in Brooklyn, N.Y., and later with families in White Plains, N.Y.

In 1984, she received her MSW from Fordham University and continued her social work in various facilities throughout the New York area.

In 2001, Diane joined Project Liberty in Orange County, N.Y., where she supported and counseled individuals affected by the events of September 11, 2001 and its aftermath.

Diane is survived by her sisters, Teresa (Lawrence) Grieco, of Muncy and Maureen Smith, of Westbrook, Maine; and her nieces, Maureen Grieco, of Alexandria, Va., Ann Grieco, of Arlington, Mass., and Katherine Grieco, of West Hartford, Conn.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Sister Celine Marie Smith.

Honoring Diane’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
