Richard Maples
Richard Maples was born February 21, 1942 in Youngstown, Ohio and died peacefully at The Gatehouse on April 7, 2026. He was predeceased by his parents Fred and Justine Maples of Baltimore, Md in 1980; his partner of 41 years David Boblitz of Baltimore, Md in 2005; and his youngest sister, Mary Woods of Williamsport, Pa Nov. 2, 2025. He is survived by his brother, Fred Maples of Elliott City, Md; his sisters, Michele Mather and Karen Humphrey of Williamsport; and his brothers-in-law Jack Humphrey and David DeFebo; and 5 nieces and 1 nephew.
Richard lived most of his life in Baltimore where he attended the University of Baltimore and entered the Army Reserves. He worked as a sales manager for a family run steel fabricating company until 1982. Richard loved all of his cars. He owned several Cadillacs and a Mercedes and created a business as a personal driver for the elderly.
Richard had many talents. He was a terrific artist and home decorator. He had a sharp mind for games of all types and he was a marvelous ballroom dancer. He was tall, handsome, a quick whit and always dressed to the nines. He was the winner of contests with his hand sewn Halloween costumes.
Richard was a star in this movie we call life. His personality attracted people of all kinds because he was so authentically himself. He loved being outrageous and being the center of attention. He would tell hilarious, embellished stories from his life’s adventures and misadventures, of which there were many. He made every family or friend gathering into a fun party full of raucous laughter.
In the 1990’s Richard lived in Bradenton, Fla until the death of his partner. Then he moved to Williamsport to be near his sisters. After his diagnosis of COPD and a hip fracture, he moved to the Williamsport Home Apts. in 2023.
In the last many years Richard’s illness kept him more sedentary and he used his artistic talents to meticulously color mandalas, ancient symbols of unity and inner peace. In this course of time, he colored thousands of gorgeous, jewel-toned drawings. These will be made into greeting cards.
When asked what were his favorite times, he replied. “All of it, I loved all of it, and wouldn’t change a thing!” Richard, you will be missed! Hope you are doing the happy dance with Mary.
